Joy Echer

Welcome From The Chair

I am honored to be the Chair of the Corporate Counsel Section, and privileged to lead the extraordinary group of attorneys who are members of this Section. Our Executive Committee is comprised of dedicated, hardworking and intelligent individuals who give freely of their time to move forward the initiatives of our Section and the New York State Bar Association.

Our Members include seasoned attorneys, recently admitted attorneys, law students, and even some who have retired. We are in-house counsel serving corporations, outside counsel serving corporate clients, and attorneys with varied practices. Most of us practice in New York state, many of us work in surrounding states, and some work internationally. Our practices range from law firms and corporations with hundreds of attorneys to solo practitioners.

The Executive Committee and I strongly believe that our Section offers something for each and every one of you. Membership benefits include a quarterly subscription to INSIDE, timely and topical CLE programming for which you receive a discounted registration rate, free lunchtime webinar informational briefings, various networking opportunities and access to the Section’s Committees. Section committees include CLE and Meetings, Diversity, Diversity Internship Program, INSIDE/Publications, Membership, Pro Bono, Strategic Initiatives, and Technology and New Media. Our committees are always pleased to welcome members who wish to become more involved!

We have many exciting programs, activities and events planned for 2020. I welcome you to become more active in our Section. Please reach out directly to me at or our Section’s Liaison, Sally Bratten at to learn more about how you can become involved. I encourage you to let us know if you have ideas for programs or initiatives that will benefit our members. I am happy to speak with you, as are the chairs of our various committees.

This committee is responsible for administering and managing all aspects of the Section’s Diversity Internship program, named in honor of former NYSBA President Kenneth G. Standard. The section works with various New York State law schools each year to select several law students from an under-represented group to apply for summer internships in corporate law departments with New York State based companies or organizations.  This committee has also set up a mentoring program for internship alumni.

2019 is the 14th year of the Corporate Counsel Section’s Kenneth G. Standard Internship Program, which focuses on identifying and supporting in-house internship opportunities for law students from a diverse range of backgrounds. The program is named in honor of former Association president, Kenneth Standard, and his commitment to initiatives aimed at increasing diversity in the legal profession. Through its Diversity Internship Committee, the Corporate Counsel Section is one of a very few number of sections that has produced a program of this nature. The Section provides in its budget, funds for half of each student’s salary, but many of the host companies over the years fully provide for the students’ salaries. Due to the generosity of the host companies, more students each year are able to participate in the program. This year students are working with in-house counsel offices: Alliance-Bernstein, Chubb, Con Edison, Pepsi Co., Salesforce, Urban Justice and Visiting Nurse Service of New York are hosting interns from Albany Law School, Cardozo, Brooklyn Law School and St. John’s University School of Law.
