June 6, 2019: Statement on the Planned Cancellation of Legal Aid for Unaccompanied Minor Migrant Children

6.6.2019

By Communications Department

New York State Bar Association President Henry M. Greenberg released the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ announcement that it is planning to eliminate federally-funded legal assistance for unaccompanied migrant children:

“We strongly condemn this plan, which undermines the rule of law, and we urge leaders in Washington to work together to resolve this matter and protect these children.  We are a nation of immigrants.  It is inhumane and contrary to our values to deny legal assistance to children who are unable to defend themselves.  The New York State Bar Association will continue to work with immigrant and legal services groups to help ensure that all detained immigrants have appropriate legal representation.”
