Diversity and inclusion, and other human rights will be front and center at the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) International Section’s 2019 Global Conference, Nov. 5-8 in Tokyo.

Titled “A World of Many Voices, United in Our Diversity,” the conference brings together jurists and leading lawyers from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, England, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, and the United States to address cutting-edge legal topics.  Hon. Joseph M. Young, Chargé d’ Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, will address the conference at a luncheon on Nov. 6, and Hon. Kunio Hamada, former justice of the Supreme Court of Japan and a founding partner of Tokyo’s Mori Hamada & Matsumoto, will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon the following day.

A “Human Rights Plenary” will address diversity and inclusion, human trafficking, and LGBTQ rights, including marriage equality. Another plenary will feature representatives of major arbitral institutions, including the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, ICC (Shanghai), ICDR (Singapore), JAMS International, the Japan International Dispute Resolution Center, the Korean Council for International Arbitration, and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. Among the topics they will discuss is the Arbitration Pledge, the global call to action to address the under-representation of women in arbitration.

Other panels will address current topics such as cybersecurity and data breach, international arbitration, investment in North Korea, and cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Two mock international arbitrations and an arbitral advocacy workshop are also among the offerings.

A judicial plenary will feature jurists from Japan, Korea, and the U.S. who will discuss courtroom ethics and best practices for counsel.  The judges involved are Hon. Mr. Michihiro Mori, former judge, Fukuoka and Tokyo District Courts; Hon. Loretta Preska, senior U.S. District judge and former chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York; and Hon. Woojin Kim, chief researcher, Judicial Policy Research Institute of the Supreme Court of Korea, and presiding judge, the Seoul High Court.
