October 26, 2018: State Bar Association Honors Legal Service Volunteers Committed To Helping New Yorkers In Need

The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) honored five volunteers and two legal service providers for their commitment to pro bono service at an awards ceremony hosted by the New York County Lawyers’ Association on Thursday night.
“Pro bono service volunteers are an invaluable asset to any legal service provider, “said NYSBA President Michael Miller. “We are proud to honor these hardworking and dedicated volunteers and legal service providers for their commitment to assisting their fellow New Yorkers.”
The five award recipients hail from across New York State and represent a variety of specialties.
- Michael Aronowsky, Nassau County Bar Association (NCBA), has become a core member of NCBA’s Mortgage Foreclosure Project, where he attends mandatory settlement conferences in Nassau Supreme Court on a near weekly basis to provide representation for those who appear without an attorney.
- Bruce Craig, LegalHealth, a division of New York Legal Assistance Group, developed LegalHealth’s Article 17A Guardianship practice, ensuring that when an intellectually or developmentally disabled person turns 18, they have someone capable and trusted appointed to make a decision on their behalf.
- Gary Gleba, Center for Elder Law & Justice (CELJ), works with CELJ’s health care advocacy unit, focusing on clients who have been denied coverage for home health care.
- Lucien Morin, II, Volunteer Legal Services Project of Monroe County, is an expert in foreclosure and bankruptcy proceedings, helping those who would not otherwise have any meaningful access to justice.
- Martin Webb, Mobilization For Justice (MFJ), has helped MFJ by staffing the weekly Consumer Right Project hotline, conducting phone intakes and advising callers on a range of consumer clients facing various problems.
In addition to these five attorneys, the City Bar Justice Center and 7th Judicial District and the Volunteer Legal Services Project of Monroe County were also recognized for their programs that launched a pro bono brief services/awards program in Manhattan and Brooklyn and provide civil legal matters help to low-income residents of Monroe County, respectively.
The award recipients are all volunteers through the Attorney Emeritus Program, which was established in 2010 by former New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman to help the growing number of New Yorkers with legal needs who cannot afford counsel.
