New York State Passes Budget Almost a Week After Deadline

4.6.2021

By Adriel Colon-Casiano

While almost everyone was sleeping, the state Legislature  passed a budget to fund the state through the Fiscal Year 2022-2023. The budget came almost a week later than the constitutionally mandated April 1 deadline and was notably different from prior years.

As usual, the final language of the budget bills were not available until shortly before the vote. This year, last minute issues included allowing online sports betting and the creation of an excluded workers fund. If you’d like to know more about the budget process, don’t miss the April 16 CLE 2021-2022 New York State Budget: What Lawyers Need to Know.

The legalization of adult use cannabis was originally proposed as part of the budget but was removed and passed as a stand-alone bill.

Also, please don’t forget to sign up for the free webinar held  at noon on April 12. NYSBA is hosting Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Senator Jeremy Cooney and Axel Bernabe, assistant counsel to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo,  to discuss legalizing adult-use cannabis. The link to register can be found here.

Keep your eyes peeled for a April 20th CLE that will be a more in depth view of how the new law impacts the practice of law in a variety of practice areas.
