A Clear Return to Full-Scale Operations

In her weekly email address, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore said that the courts have returned to full-scale operations, albeit in the context of a new normal defined by the continuation of health and safety protocols, and the smart use of virtual tools to limit unnecessary personal appearances.
She said that it has been four weeks since the courts moved to 3-foot physical distancing for all judges, court staff and court users in all the trial courts. “I am pleased to report that the change is going smoothly,” said DiFiore.
She noted her pride in how the judges and staff performed their duties, but also acknowledged that legal problems intensified for many vulnerable citizens, including survivors of domestic violence who were put at greater risk of abuse by the need to isolate at home with abusers and by the difficulty in accessing vital support systems and services.
“It is a particular point of pride that the judges and professional staff in our 38 Domestic Violence and 43 Integrated Domestic Violence Courts across the state have demonstrated endless dedication and resourcefulness in finding new and innovative ways to maintain court,” said DiFiore. “Our court system has long been a national leader in the pursuit of effective approaches to intimate partner violence.”
Judge Feinman
DiFiore announced that the unveiling of the portrait of the late Judge Paul G. Feinman, the 113th associate judge of the Court of Appeals, will take place in the Courtroom of Court of Appeals Hall at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19th, and it will be live-streamed on the court’s website.
“I do hope that you can join us, as your time and responsibilities permit, for the unveiling of the portrait of this very fine judge, public servant and wonderful person,” said DiFiore.
