NYSBA Panel to Discuss Laws That Threaten to Undermine Election Integrity

The New York State Bar Association presents an evening dedicated to diversity and democracy that will feature a panel on election interference and include the presentation of the Honorable George Bundy Smith Pioneer Award.
The 2022 Smooth Moves Diversity & Inclusion Continuing Legal Education program and the Pioneer Award presentation to Rep. Stacey Plaskett runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on April 28. Journalists wishing to attend the virtual event should contact Brandon Vogel at bvogel@nysba.org.
Jerry Goldfeder, special counsel at Stroock, Stroock & Lavan, will moderate the discussion, and Terry Ao Minnis, senior director of census and voting programs for Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and Amia Trigg, senior counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, will be on the panel. They will explore the spate of laws that threaten to undermine election integrity – and what lawyers can do to preserve the country’s constitutional democracy.
The Commercial & Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association, the Committee on Continuing Legal Education and the Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be bestowing the award on Rep. Plaskett. The award recognizes an attorney or jurist of color whose career exemplifies Bundy Smith’s legal excellence and commitment to community.
Bundy Smith, who was a judge on New York’s Court of Appeals, worked as a Freedom Rider during the Civil Rights Movement and displayed an unwavering commitment to social justice during his 30 years as a judge.
Rep. Plaskett represents the United States Virgin Islands’ at-large Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.Plaskett is the first member from a U.S. territory and the fourth African American woman to serve on the House Committee on Ways and Means, the oldest and one of the most exclusive committees in Congress.
Rep. Plaskett started her career as an assistant district attorney in the Bronx DA’s office. She served as senior counsel at the Department of Justice under both Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson and his successor James Comey.
