10 Tips for Practicing in Commercial and Federal Litigation

In February 2022, the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section participated in a law student roundtable discussion that provided current law students with a better understanding on the experiences, rewards, and challenges practicing attorneys have faced in Commercial and Federal Litigation while offering insight on the various career opportunities available.
From this discussion one of the panelists, Mark A. Berman, Esq., from Ganfer Shore Leeds & Zauderer LLP, compiled 10 tips for law students who are pursuing a career of practicing in Commercial and Federal Litigation:
- Take a New York Practice class in law school
- Take technology classes in law school
- Consider applying for a federal or state clerkship while in law school and even after you start practicing
- Become proficient in the newest technologies that litigators use
- Join NYSBA and the Commercial & Federal Litigation Section and attend events where you can mingle with judges and experienced practitioners
- Volunteer to organize or be on CLE panels.
- Volunteer to represent parties pro bono in order to get court experience early on in your career
- Write articles for bar association journals
- Take continuing legal educations classes in deposition practice
- Network with friends in the business world for potential business.
