New York State Bar Association Connects Law Firms With New Lawyers in First Ever Virtual Career Fair

The New York State Bar Association is hosting a virtual career fair on Sept. 28 to connect new lawyers with firms looking to hire. The fair is an answer to new lawyers who said it would be helpful if the association provided career advice and job opportunities.

The three-hour event will connect new law school graduates, newly-admitted attorneys and those looking for a job change with nearly 20 firms that have openings.

“We are providing resources for members to make the most of their careers at all levels. For new members, that means access to some of the most exciting career opportunities in the state,” said Sherry Levin Wallach, NYSBA president. “But with this career fair, we are also addressing a serious need expressed by our members who are finding hiring very difficult right now.”

Christan Surdey represents Coughlin & Gerhart in Binghamton, which has several attorney openings at its headquarters and satellite offices across the southern tier. The firm, which has more than 50 lawyers, is looking to increase its pool of candidates for several job openings.

“We are having a tough time finding attorneys who want to live in the southern tier,” she said. “We are looking to bring people to this area, which is a great place to live and raise a family. We are a growing firm with a family friendly atmosphere. We want everyone here to succeed.”

William McCracken is a partner at Ganfer Shore Leeds and Zauderer in New York City. He says the career fair gives his firm the opportunity to broaden its reach. It’s harder for a smaller firm such as his own to get its name out to potential candidates, making the career fair a perfect fit.

“We are a boutique firm with a history and heritage, specializing in commercial litigation and real estate development,” he said. “We are looking for smart candidates who share our interests and are looking to succeed. “

Career Fair Preparation

New lawyers are invited to career workshops before the fair to work on resume and cover letter writing, interview techniques and other job-hunting skills. During the fair, candidates will have the opportunity to explore several areas of practice and learn from recruiters what employers are seeking.

Here are a few tips from our recruiters to help candidates prepare:

  • Wear professional clothing
  • Come with a positive attitude and an eagerness to explore new opportunities
  • Have materials that you want to share with employers ready to present
  • Research the firms that will be at the fair ahead of the event
  • Recognize you’ll get out of the fair what you put into it
  • Treat every interview as an opportunity to learn

Job seekers can register to attend the fair here.

Firms that would like to host a virtual booth should register here.
