New York State Bar Association Commends Gov. Hochul for Timely Investment in Mental Health and The Housing Crisis
1.10.2023
Sherry Levin Wallach, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about Gov. Hochul’s decision to spend $1 billion to help people living with mental illness:
“It is welcome news that Gov. Hochul proposes to invest $1 billion in mental health care. This money is sorely needed because of a severe lack of treatment options for people living with mental illness. For far too long, this state and nation have failed to provide compassionate care to these vulnerable residents. Prisons and jails, which are least equipped to help people, have become de facto psychiatric institutions, further exacerbating problems for people living with mental illness. This timely investment the governor has proposed, coupled with her focus on addressing the state’s affordable housing crisis, will provide countless benefits to the people of the state.”
