Justice LaSalle Honored at NYSBA’s Annual Meeting 2023

Months ago, the Judicial Section of the New York State Bar Association selected Hon. Hector LaSalle as the winner of the most prestigious 2023 Distinguished Jurist Award. Today, Justice LaSalle received this award to thunderous applause and overwhelming support and appreciation from NYSBA members.

In addition, several programs and events were held on day three of the Annual Meeting, where thousands of NYSBA members and NYS attorney have descended on the Big Apple for the first in-person Annual Meeting since 2020.

Here are some other notable events and programs from day three:

  • The Judicial Section honored Presiding Justice Hector D. LaSalle, Second Judicial Department with the 2023 Distinguished Jurist Award. In his remarks, Hon. Hector LaSalle said talked about the hard work that is done in the legal community, the vast majority of which goes unseen and underappreciated. He also congratulated his colleagues who were honored. In addition, the Judicial Section honored Hon. Erika M. Edwards, Justice, New York County, Civil Term, Hon. Sallie Manzanet-Daniels, Associate Justice, Appellate Division, 1st Department, Hon. Lillian Wan, Associate Justice, Appellate Division, 2nd
  • A jam-packed morning section in the Labor and Employment Law Section met on Day Three of Annual Meeting 2023. A great discussion and interaction occurred in the Plenary One portion, with a dynamic panel addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion.  The panel moderated by Sasha Carbone, Esq., Associate General Counsel American Arbitration Association and included: Alan Symonette, Esq., Symonette ADR Services, Lisa Csencsits, Director, DE&I, Leadership and HE Professional Programs, Cornell University, Melissa Biren, Esq., Arbitrator & Mediator.
  • Mega deals and market trends in recent years was the hot topic in the Health Law Section. Jason Madden, Proskauer Rose LLP New York, presented on the trends in private equity investment in the healthcare sector, as well as sub-sectors of interests to investors and legal challenges. Madden discussed how economic pressures have impacted the healthcare sector, the emergence of value-based care and the increase willingness for providers to assume risk.
  • NYSBA’s House of Delegates meet at Annual Meeting as per the organization’s bylaws. Reports from nominated committees, election of delegates, updates from the New York Bar Foundation, and several reports and recommendations to discussed, debated, and voted on.
  • Elder Law and Special Needs Section held a program and reception in the third day of Annual Meeting 2023. Hundreds of members took part in the educational program on a wide range of topics including cybersecurity and privacy, Medicaid Asset Protection Trusts – Drafting Update, and several ethical considerations. The section also addressed the impact and aftermath of Covid on the industry and clients.

This year’s Annual Meeting is a hybrid event. The first four days feature all in-person events, including three programs and events taking place on Saturday morning. On Monday, January 23, and Tuesday, January 24 Annual Meeting will host more than a dozen virtual programs and events.
