New York State Bar Association Commends Selection of Justice Renwick To Lead the Appellate Division, First Department
6.21.2023
Richard Lewis, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about Gov. Kathy Hochul’s appointment of Justice Dianne Renwick as presiding justice of the Appellate Division, First Department:
“Justice Dianne Renwick has done an exceptional job of leading the Appellate Division for the First Department of New York State Supreme Court since she was appointed in an acting capacity in March. Now that Gov. Hochul has selected her to remain in the position, we look forward to working with her and the rest of the judiciary to ensure that the legal system operates efficiently and effectively.
“Justice Renwick brings a depth of experience to the job, having previously served as an Appellate Division judge, a Civil Court judge, a Housing Court judge, and an attorney for The Legal Aid Society. As the first woman of color to lead the First Department since it was created in 1894, her nomination is a historic one. With Justice Renwick as a role model, we hope that the profession will attract more diverse law school students, which is good for the bench, the bar, and all those whose lives are impacted by the New York State court system.”
