Statement From NYSBA President Regarding Reports That 545 Parents of Children Separated At U.S. Border Cannot Be Found
10.23.2020
New York State Bar Association President Scott M. Karson issued the following statement in response to reports that the parents of 545 migrant children separated at the southern U.S. border between 2017 and 2018 by the Trump administration cannot be located by federal authorities.
“It is appalling that in the approximately two years since the federal government ceased its inhumane policy of forcefully separating minor migrant children from their parents, that officials are still unable to reunite so many needlessly broken families.
“These families have been callously torn apart and deprived of due process. Children, many of whom were infants at the time they were separated from their parents, are likely to experience lifelong physical and emotional harm due to the useless trauma caused by this ill-advised approach. The administration should be ashamed that it has further compounded the tragedy it has created, and must make every possible effort to right this wrong and reunite all the families as required by the court.”
