NYSBA Helps Attorneys Deal with Rise in Domestic Violence Incidents
10.27.2020
In recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the New York State Bar Association is hosting a free training session to educate lawyers to ensure victims of domestic violence have meaningful access to safety and justice. Statistics strongly suggest that the incidence of domestic violence has increased considerably during the pandemic.
Ellen Schell, general counsel to the NYS Office for Prevention of Domestic Violence, is the presenter. The program, “Key Skills In Client Counseling: But I Don’t Represent Victims Of Domestic Violence, Do I?” is open to the press.
“The New York State Bar Association is committed to assisting victims and lawyers through this unprecedented time. Lawyers who better understand domestic violence will be a more effective advocate, particularly as mandatory stay-at-home orders and lack of social interaction during the pandemic have brought on a rise in domestic violence cases,” said NYSBA President Scott M. Karson (Lamb & Barnosky). “We are pleased to provide this program free to our members.”
Topics include:
- What is domestic violence, and why is it relevant to my practice?
- How do I identify clients who might be victims of domestic violence?
- How might domestic violence affect my representation of clients?
- How do I help clients who are victims of domestic violence?
NYSBA will also host a CLE program. “Domestic Violence Trends In The Context Of Bail Reform And The COVID-19 Pandemic,” tomorrow from 2-4 p.m. This two-part Domestic Violence Awareness Month program sponsored by the Third Judicial District Gender Fairness Committee will first discuss bail reform, the unintended impact on DV cases and possible legislative adjustments to the new law. The second part will examine the dynamics, pitfalls and future of DV cases during the pandemic era. It is open to the press.
