January 23, 2018: William Freivogel To Be Honored with NYS Bar Association Ethics Committee Award

The Committee on Professional Ethics of the New York State Bar Association will award William Freivogel of Chicago its Sanford D. Levy Award. Freivogel will receive the award during the State Bar Association’s Annual Meeting in New York City on January 24.
The Sanford D. Levy Award, named for a former member of the Committee, has been granted annually since 1982 to an individual or institution that has significantly contributed to an understanding of professional ethics.
“For years, Bill Freivogel has supplied an indispensable resource for lawyers who concentrate on the law of lawyering, who have an interest in ethics issues, or who research conflicts questions,” said Gerry Harper of New York City (Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison), chair of the ethics committee. “The depth and scope of his writings, as well as his impact in our understanding of the often thorny world of conflicts, make him a worthy recipient of the Sanford D. Levy Award.”
Freivogel, an independent consultant to lawyers and law firms on ethics matters, risk management, and related disciplines, is the author of Freivogel on Conflicts, an online publication devoted to analysis of case law and ethics opinions involving lawyer conflicts of interest. Freely accessible, Freivogel on Conflicts provides reports on new developments as well as more than 250 pages of material, indexed for user ease, on ethics decisions throughout the country.
Additionally, Freivogel has written numerous articles appearing in, among others, The Professional Lawyer, The Tulane Law Review, The European Lawyer, The Delaware Lawyer, and The Illinois Bar Journal. Freivogel served as a consultant to the American Law Institute in its formulation of the Restatement (Third) of the Law of Lawyering and as a member of the Advisory Council on the American Bar Association’s Ethics 2000 project. He has spoken on conflicts issues in a variety of forums, including for the ABA, the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, and various law schools.
