New York State Bar Association Commends Legislature For Approving Clean Slate Legislation

Richard Lewis, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about the passage today of Clean Slate legislation:
“The New York State Bar Association has been working with legislators to make it easier for former offenders to lead full, productive lives after they have paid their debts to society. The Clean Slate legislation approved today would do just that. This compromise will ensure that employers, landlords and other members of the community will not have access to criminal records years after crimes are committed. When this bill is signed into law, we can truly say that in New York we believe in rehabilitation and second chances – not just punishment.”
