New York State Bar Association Gravely Concerned About Iranian Government Crackdown

Sherry Levin Wallach, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about the Iranian government’s violent attacks against peaceful protesters:
In recent weeks, there have been increasing reports that the Iranian government and its Morality Police have violently arrested and attacked peaceful protesters in Iran, many of whom are women, students, and children under the age of 18. There have also been reports of intimidation and violence against lawyers, some of whom were arrested during peaceful protests outside the Iranian Bar Association.
The New York State Bar Association is gravely concerned about this crackdown by the Iranian government and stands in solidarity with Iranian women and all Iranians who are defending their rights. As a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Iranian government has a duty to recognize the right to peaceful assembly and association and fundamental rights of opinion and expression. Its continued use of violence, intimidation, and coercion against its own citizens contravenes the rule of law and must be halted. We call upon the Iranian government to immediately restore individual rights.
As an organization of legal professionals in over 100 countries, NYSBA has a special duty to promote, support, and protect international law and the rule of law. NYSBA calls upon other international legal professional associations and civil society organizations to affirm their support for these basic principles of international law and the fundamental principles of human rights for all individuals and stand in solidarity with the people of Iran.
