New York State Bar Association President Scott Karson Calls Upon Senate To Fund Legal Services Corporation

NYSBA President Scott M. Karson commended the House of Representatives for approving $465 million for the Legal Services Corporation, $25 million above last year’s allotment. He called upon the Senate to follow suit.
“I applaud this important action taken by the House of Representatives, which will benefit so many New Yorkers who are suffering from both legal and economic hardships during this pandemic,” Karson said.
LSC is an independent non-profit corporation established by Congress in 1974 to provide financial support for civil legal aid to low-income Americans. LSC promotes equal access to justice by providing funding to 133 independent non-profit legal aid programs.
New York has seven LSC grantees: Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, Legal Assistance of Western New York, Legal Services NYC, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee and Neighborhood Legal Services (Buffalo).
LSC grantees serve low-income individuals, children, families, seniors, and veterans in 813 offices in every congressional district. It is critically important that Congress provide adequate funding for LSC in order to provide access to justice for those who need assistance.
Karson thanked retiring Representatives Nita Lowey, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, and Jose Serrano, chair of the Commerce-Justice-State Appropriations Subcommittee, for their tremendous efforts year after year to secure funding for the LSC and for their tireless advocacy for New Yorkers.
