NYSBA President-Elect Richard Lewis Named to Court Modernization Action Committee
3.27.2023
A committee of legal experts has been given the responsibility of implementing recommendations that will improve the administration of justice in New York State’s courts in the wake of the pandemic, Acting Chief Judge Anthony Cannataro and Acting Chief Administrative Judge Tamiko Amaker announced today.
Leaders from the courts, the bar, and the community have been appointed to the committee, which will be chaired by Supreme Court Justice Craig Doran of the Seventh Judicial District.
The New York State Bar Association President-Elect Richard Lewis and former presidents Henry M. Greenberg and Michael Miller have been appointed to the committee.
“We are honored that the courts reached out to us,” Lewis said. “The bench and the bar share a mutual interest in improving the court system. Greater cooperation between the bar and the judicial branch will benefit the courts, the bar and the community.”
Greenberg chaired the Commission to Reimagine the Future of New York’s Courts Pandemic Working Group. He called the group’s 2022 report “a blueprint for action.”
Some of the recommendations in the report include:
- Increasing transparency and consistency when court proceedings are virtual
- Improving how courts operate remotely
- Ensuring public access to courts operating virtually
- Expanding electronic filing
- Improving training and technical support for judges, court staff and court users
