NYSBA President Says Judges and Lawyers in Afghanistan Must Be Protected

New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) President T. Andrew Brown today issued the following statement regarding the plight of judges and lawyers in Afghanistan:

“We join the international community in demanding that all the judges, lawyers and court staff in Afghanistan, who have worked tirelessly to uphold the rule of law, be protected. We are particularly concerned about the welfare of 250 female judges following the assassination of two female judges in Kabul earlier this year. We fear that, under the new regime, attempts to thwart the rule of law may gather strength.

We stand beside the International Bar Association (IBA), The Law Society of England & Wales, The Bar Council and other bar associations in urging the new regime to shield lawyers and judges from harm. We ask that the rule of law be upheld, and we urge President Biden and the international community to safeguard those who have helped the U.S. forces maintain law and order. They must not be forgotten.”
