March 13, 2018: New York State Bar Association Presents Continuing Legal Education Regarding Automated Vehicles, The Future of Mediation

Two upcoming New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Continuing Legal Education (CLE) events will examine emerging areas of interest to lawyers – the legal issues surrounding autonomous vehicles and the future of mediation.
On Wednesday March 14, NYSBA CLE presents: “Autonomous & Connected Vehicles: Evidentiary Issues Around the Corner.” The event will look at the legal issues pertaining to automated vehicles, including liability for accidents, the applicability of different types of insurance, their regulation at the state and federal level, the types of data they collect and its use in litigation, their role in smart cities, and cybersecurity concerns.
The event is co-sponsored by the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section, Committee on Continuing Legal Education, Committee on Transportation Law, and Committee on Technology and the Legal Profession.
On Thursday March 22, NYSBA CLE presents: “The Litigative DNA – The Underutilization of Mediation in New York and What Can Be Done About It.” The daylong conference will explore the contemporary role of mediation in New York and its potential for expansion. Experts will also discuss mediation initiatives that have taken place in other jurisdictions and the substantial need for additional mediators and trained mediation counsel if the use of mediation is substantially increased in the courts statewide.
Leading judges, mediators and bar leaders will be among the speakers throughout the day, including Lawrence K. Marks, chief administrative judge of the New York State Unified Court System; Loretta A. Preska, a senior U.S. District Court judge for the Southern District of New York; and William M. Skretny, a senior U.S. District Court judge for the Western District of New York.
Co-sponsored by the Commercial and Federal Litigation, Corporate Counsel, and Dispute Resolution sections, NYSBA President Sharon Stern Gerstman of Buffalo (Magavern Magavern Grimm) will also be among the panelists along with past presidents Claire P. Gutekunst of Yonkers (Gutekunst ADR) and Stephen P. Younger of New York City (Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler).
