October 4, 2018: Statement from State Bar Association President Michael Miller Regarding Recent Changes in Poland’s Judicial System

10.4.2018

By Communications Department

New York State Bar Association President Michael Miller issued the following statement today:

“Throughout its 141-year history, the New York State Bar Association has been staunchly committed to the rule of law and fundamental principles of justice, including an independent and impartial judiciary, equal treatment for all under the law, and the right of every individual to be represented by and have a protected confidential relationship with an attorney. We are deeply disturbed by reports regarding certain changes in Poland’s judicial system, changes that effectively place the country’s judicial system under the complete control of the executive branch and render it highly vulnerable to political pressure. European legal associations have already called for reversal of these policies. In solidarity with the lawyers of Poland, some of whom are members of the New York State Bar Association, we call on the Polish government to immediately take all steps necessary to ensure an independent judicial system and to reestablish the rule of law.”
