Women on the Move (2020)
The Women on the Move program is a Continuing Legal Education seminar focusing on an array of topics of particular interest to women attorneys. This year’s program theme is Resilience: Strengthening Your Career Through Mindful Lawyering.
As lawyers and New Yorkers, we are expected to be tough and resilient. But the events of the past few months could – and did – affect our ability to meet the competing needs of our clients, our families, our diverse society and ourselves. This program will feature speakers and panels offering inspiration and practical guidance on finding balance and addressing the emotional needs of lawyers practicing in this most stressful time. Speakers will offer their own experiences in overcoming their personal challenges, and teach attendees tools to practice law mindfully and with self-compassion.
Viewing Challenges as Opportunities for Growth in Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession
Keynote Speaker Angela Winfield, Esq., Associate Vice President for Inclusion and Workforce Diversity at Cornell University, will address
how blindness is not just a physical sensory condition. People are blind in many different ways and blindness can show up as feeling lost, stuck, hopeless, confused… Are you ready to regain your vision? Do you want to be more empowered, effective and dynamic at work? Do you want to increase diversity and inclusion at work? Angela will recount how her blindness clarified her personal vision. She also will highlight how the law served as the backdrop for her personal and professional growth.
Practicing Law with Mindfulness
Lawyers, whether practicing traditional law or working in another capacity, are the problem solvers. This means we often take on the stress and anxiety of those around us. Now more than ever, lawyers are balancing the problems of others with their individual stress. This panel will explore the impact of uncertainty, stress, depression and anxiety on the mind and the body. You will learn how to maintain their physical and mental health using mindful practices
Active Listening & Questioning: Tips & Skills for Meaningful Results
Have you ever asked a question, then realized you weren’t listening to the answer? Have you ever been so busy formulating your answer to an anticipated question, you didn’t hear the actual question? This panel will provide practical advice on asking good questions and giving responsive answers. This advice is useful with clients and witnesses as well as when interviewing or being interviewed for jobs. Tips on how to explore sensitive topics will be provided. The panel will also focus on how to ask for what you really want.
The Path of Resilience: Bending but Not Breaking
The first rule of law school? We don’t talk about our feelings. Lawyers benefit from learning how to understand their emotions, prioritize their well-being, and engage in balance. Time management techniques, strategies for self-regulation, and tips on maintaining a view toward optimism will be discussed in this program.
